Fun Weekend on the Cal Salmon

We had a great President’s Day weekend on the Cal Salmon. This is typically Smith River weekend, but the low water drove us to greener pastures.

On saturday, rafters went to the Class IV Butler Creek section, while a few hungover kayakers bumped down the Class V Nordheimer Section. Everyone reported low water and a good time. On sunday, we hung out as a group on the Nordheimer section with seven rafts, five kayakers, three scouts, two swims, and one big party. We were all amazed at how runnable and fun the Cal Salmon was even at lower water. That night we danced under clear skies and a near full moon.

Most people went home monday morning, but a small group of kayakers ran the South Fork of the Trinity on the way home. The “Three Bears” section provided some excitement after an unnamed participant swam through door #3 in “Mama Bear” after we were told “Don’t even think about running door #3.”

Overall it was a great weekend of boating, dancing, and hanging out with great friends.

Snowpack Update

After a few weeks without precipitation, the percentage of average snowpack has dropped quite a bit. The Tuolumne watershed has 133% percentage of normal for “snow water content” as of February 1st. The percentage drops as you go north towards the American River and is higher as you go south.

It looks like we’ll at least have an average season, but with some cold weather and a few more storms, California should have one of its best seasons in years.
