Smith River This Weekend

This weekend is President’s Day weekend which means that it’s time for some Smith River action. The Smith River is perfect today (Monday), but a week without rain means that we’re likely to have low water for the Smith again. Low water on the Smith means that we do laps on the Gorges and bump our way down the North Fork.

The non-official meeting time is 8:00 AM each morning at the Hiouchi Cafe and 10:00 PM each evening at Everetts in Crescent City. Most likely, we’ll be running the South Fork Saturday, North Fork Sunday, and do some duckying on Monday on the upper Middle Fork.

If you are very poor, you’ll want to camp under a bridge somewhere. If you have a few bucks to spare, camping at Jedidiah Smith state park is worth the $15. If money isn’t much of a problem, split a room at the BVI (Best Value Inn) in Crescent City and enjoy the hot tub!

California Snowpack is Average…This is Good!

As of February 3, 2005 the snowpack in California seems about average. This is great news as we can expect a fun spring medium water season, a short high water season, and hopefully “normal” river flows throughout the summer.

River basins in the Northern Sierra have below average snowpack and in the Southern Sierra they have above average snowpack. The Mokulumne seems to be the dividing line at 108% of normal for snow depth and water content.

Check out the CDEC Snow Course Measurements website to learn more about the individual river drainages.
