Some Fun New Rafting Web Sites

Winter weather has arrived and only the diehards are out there boating. Rivers like the North Fork of the American, Eel, the Cal Salmon, and Smith are winter classics that tend to flow after winter rains. Skiing will soon take over many of our thoughts, but here are a few fun web sites to explore when you’re thinking about warmer weather and spring runoff.

  • Action2 is a great blog about active travel, recreation, and fun. It has all kinds of fun travel stories and ideas.
  • A Wet State is a new web site detailing some well know and some not so well known kayaking runs. The author mostly describes Class III+ to IV+ runs and hopes to continue adding new run descriptions and video all year.
  • CaliRiver is a new site that has quick descriptions of rafting runs in and around California. The best feature of this site is the rafting news which brings together news from your favorite websites including this one!
  • Hood Livin’ Adam, Zach, Hata, Maggie, and Geoff moved to Hood River, Oregon and this site details their exploration of this new area. They’re also working on a video podcast!

Fall Trip on the South Fork

This past weekend, we got together for the ECHO party and boated the good old South Fork of the American. What a great time of year to run the river. We had about 1600 cfs which was good fun and didn’t see anyone else except for a few kayakers. We all marveled about ho nice it was to have the river to ourselves.

We put in at Chili bar on Saturday with a couple of rafts and a few kayaks. First Threat was a great kayak surf spot at this flow. On Sunday, we did the gorge and were treated to rapids all the way to take out since the reservoir was so low.

The downside of the fall trip…It was cold and wetsuits were mandatory even though it was sunny.
