Walt Blackadar Inducted into Whitewater Hall of Fame

Posted in News on December 11th, 2007 by admin – Be the first to comment

Walt Blackadar is best known for his solo trip through Turnback Canyon on the Alsek River in Northern British Columbia. This trip (that few have done since) was even mentioned in a 1972 article of Sports Illustrated. He did it in 1971 when he was 49 years old and had only been kayaking for four years.

Walt was a physician in Salmon, Idaho and a boating hero even though some people thought of him as reckless. He was also known for the first descent of Devil’s Canyon on the Susitna River in Alaska. One of his most interesting stories is that he was paddling on the Snake River at the bottom of Hell’s Canyon when Evel Knievel attempted to jump across it. After Evel Knievel didn’t make the jump, Walt paddled over to him, assisted him, rode with him on the helicopter, and even stood next to him when he met the press.
