Rafting the Kings RiverThe Kings River is best known for it classic Class III run that is a great time at high flows in the spring and early summer. The Kings has one of the largest watersheds in the Sierra, so it typically has the highest flow of any Sierra river when the snow melt comes down from the mountains. When the water finally drops, there is also an exciting Class V run on the Upper Kings through a spectacular granite gorge. The upper run is rarely rafted, but well worth the trouble for experienced thrill-seekers. The lower Class III run on the Kings River is great due to easy access, fun rapids, and the social atmosphere. This run can be characterized as one that has big waves and a good number of "holes" that you'll want to avoid. Southern California boaters tend to congregate here on spring weekends for paddling and parties. There's nothing like an evening of partying after a day of paddling big water. You'll have fun here if you spend a long weekend and are looking for fun whitewater. The drive will take longer than you expected, so don't just go for the day or your driving to paddling (or partying) ratio will be way too high. Please bring the right equipment and stay warm by wearing at least a wetsuit. If you're not experienced, please contact a professional outfitter. |
