The
middle Fork of the Eel is a fun two day winter paddling trip. It's not
done very often because you basically have 20 miles of class II followed
by a class IV and class V (or portage) around mile 20. There is another
fun class IV rapid just before take out at Dos Rios. Basically beginning
boaters don't want to do it because of the hard rapids and advanced boaters
don't want to do it because of the 20 miles of class II. It's definitely
worth doing once to see some of the spectacular gorges and one of my favorite
campsites ever. For shuttle and logistics check out Creekin'
Middle Eel write up.
We had an amazing campground on river left across from a creek and a
small house around mile 18. I'd like to camp a group of 50 there some
day and pull out the lounge chairs next to a keg.
This would make a great raft run except that the class V rapid, Coal
Mine Falls, would be pretty tough to run and very challenging to line
or portage. It isn't impossible to portage as some people suggested to
me, but it would be time consuming. Don't even think about a one day in
a raft unless you plan to run the rapid. On our run (2500 cfs) we
though that Coal Mine Falls was five miles past the class IV above it
and we accidentaly ran it blind. I caught an eddy half way down and scouted
the remaining rapid as I watched my (nameless) partner swim the last drop. What
I saw from the scout was a ton of Sieves. At our flow of 2500 cfs there
were nasty sieves in the middle and on the right at the bottom.
On our trip we put in at around 2 pm on the first day. We had to take
out by 11 am the next morning so that I could make it to "Mama Mia"
in the city. We woke up at around 5 am and took off by 10 am. which made
for a rushed trip.
